50 years later, Arenac Central Class of 1959 comes home

STANDISH — The Arenac Central High School, class of 1959, came back to Standish 50 years later for its reunion on Sept. 3-4.

The group, which graduated Arenac Central High School, located where Standish Elementary currently stands, toured the new Standish-Sterling Central High School (SSC), was introduced at the football game Thursday night, visited the Standish Historical Depot and Welcome Center and dined at the Pine River Golf Course during its reunion in Standish.

On hand at the reunion was Bob Potts, who was a member of the school naming committee. Potts says when Sterling and Standish high schools consolidated in 1959, the officers from each school got together to name the school, select its colors and choose a mascot.

Quotes from the reunion

Leonard Trombley, class of 1960 (the first graduating class of SSC), wife Judy was member of the class of 1959:

“This is quite a school now. If they’d of had this when I was in school, I would have never made it to class on time.”

Gene Gillette, Arenac Central Class of 1959,who took his first in-depth tour of the school on Friday:

“I think it’s fantastic.”

“We graduated from the old Standish High School. … That gymnasium was so small, we had our graduation on the football field.”

Phyllis (Currie) Druley, class of 59:

“When we consolidated, these were rival schools. … And we had so much fun.”

“We were the only year of Arenac Central. We were the one and only.”

What a difference 50 years makes! We had some trouble recognizing each other, but no trouble yakking & laughing it up.

We've put lots of "before & after" pictures here: http://picasaweb.google.com/ArenacCentral
