STANDISH — A ceremony in honor of the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, 2001 will be held at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Standish.

The event is free to the public, and will be held Sunday, Sept. 11 at noon at the Our Lady of Sorrows 9/11 Memorial at the church.

Event organizer Marilyn Metiva said the ceremony is expected to last around 30 minutes. Those attending will light candles and participate in a moment of silence.

Metiva, a Standish resident, said she has hosted an annual 9/11 ceremony for nine years.

“We do this in remembrance of everyone who was killed and everyone who helped that day,” she said. “We held the first event in 2002 at the Arenac County (Building) and it was a candlelight ceremony.”

Metiva said the event has continued to be a success.

“That first year, it worked out well and people came out,” she said. “Last year we held it at the (Standish Historical) Depot.”

Metiva, who is a member of Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church, said this is the first year the ceremony will be held at the 9/11 memorial.

“I think the ceremony would be a success there,” she said,

Metiva said she believes that the community appreciates the event.

“People like to attend,” she said. “Local boy scouts and girl scouts have helped us in the past and usually I find a local minister to talk.”

The 10th anniversary ceremony will feature guest speakers Curt Hillman of Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church and Rev. Christopher Coman’s mother, Kathy Lorentzen, as well as music from Devin and Yvette Chisholm.

“Representatives from the Arenac County Sheriff’s Department, Standish Area Fire Authority and Mobile Medical Response will also be on hand,” she said.

Metiva said she continues to host the event because she feels like it is something good for the community.

“(9/11) is something the community needs to remember,” she said.
