MIO — Arenac Eastern's Nick Phelan hit the game-tying jump shot at Mio AuSable on Friday to tie the score at 42-42 and give the Eagles a shot overtime and a rare win at Mio.

The Thunderbolts insured no overtime was necessary, drilling a long shot to win it with two seconds left.

"The kid basically threw up a 20-foot half-hook shot to win it," said AE coach Bob Morgan. "We actually defended it pretty well."

The Eagles led 21-18 at the half and clung to a 32-31 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"We played the entire game without falling apart for one or two quarters," Morgan said. "However, we didn't come close to our potential. These kids just need to learn how to win.

"I'm proud of (Phelan's game-tying shot), though."

Caleb Whitney and Brad King each scored nine points for the Eagles (1-13, 0-10 North Star League), with Graham Morgan adding eight.

Jonathan Allwardt paced Mio (4-9, 4-7) with 11.
