AE finishes season strong
Eagles win three of final four contests
TWINING — Arenac Eastern's boys’ basketball team closed out the regular season with its third win in four games Friday with a 61-29 defeat of Atlanta.
The victory enabled the Eagles to climb into a seventh-place tie in the league with the Huskies and sends them into the district tournament with more momentum than they've had in years.
"It wasn't pretty but our seniors really stepped up," said AE coach Bob Morgan. "It was fun to get a big win in the last home game of the season."
The Eagles led 29-18 at the half, but blew the game open with a 20-2 third quarter run that saw Atlanta's Dan Haren leave the game with a knee injury.
AE also hit 20-of-33 from the free throw line, continuing its late-season improvement at the charity stripe.
John Chmura led the Eagles (4-15, 2-12 North Star League) with 13 points; Graham Morgan added 10 points and 17 rebounds and Nick Phelan had nine points.
Nick Gross led Atlanta (3-15, 2-12) with 11.
