AE girls bring down Atlanta

ATLANTA — The Arenac Eastern girls basketball team took an early lead Thursday night and never looked back, beating Atlanta 62-14.

AE held Atlanta off the board in the first quarter, outscoring them 16-0.

“I think we played good,” said coach Butch Beckham. “They (Atlanta) only have six kids, so they’re just hanging on. I thought we played really good. We ran good offense and played good defense.”

“That was really the game,” Beckham said of the first quarter. “They just don’t have the numbers up there.”

Ashley Navarre was the top scorer for AE, with 14 points. Also scoring double-digits were Chelsea Dery with 11 points, and Maddie Nelson with 10.

Beckham said despite the great performance Thursday, there are still a few things he’d like the girls to work on.

“We probably need to be more patient,” he said. “Turnovers have come down for us since the break. We need to concentrate on keeping turnovers down.”

AE will next face Fairview on Monday night in a conference match up. Beckham said the last game against Fairview was a three-point game. He said the girls are working hard, as the next three games they play will be league games.

“We need to practice every day and try to get better,” Beckham said.
