AGS boys’ get it done with solid effort

AUGRES — It wasn't spectacular, but it was solid, and it was enough to deliver AuGres-Sims a 53-36 North Star League boys’ basketball victory over Posen.

"We can play a lot better than that," said AGS coach Gordie Ostrander. "But we did a lot of the little things right and we were unselfish for the most part, so it was a good win."

Alex Lutz hit 5-of-6 shots in the third quarter and Nate Jennings had back-to-back baskets to help AGS break away from a 29-28 lead midway through the period.

Posen's Shane Hentkowski's 3-pointer pulled the Vikings to within 37-31 early in the fourth quarter, but Chad Taylor answered with his only 3-pointer of the night and Travis Byard, in his first game back from an injury, fed Jennings for a layup to give AGS a 42-31 lead that was never threatened.

The Wolverines worked the ball inside to Byard in the first quarter, and he responded with eight points as the Wolverines bounced back from an early 5-0 deficit. Back-to-back hoops by A.J. Baker in the second quarter gave the Wolverines a 23-15 lead before Hentkowski closed the half with a 3-point play.

Lutz led the Wolverines (5-6, 4-4 NSL) with 15 points, with Byard adding 12 and Taylor 11. Jennings had nine rebounds and Lutz had six assists. The Wolverines also hit a season-best 5-of-6 (83 percent) from the charity stripe.

Hentkowski led Posen (3-7, 3-5) with 11 points.
