AGS girls beat Oscoda in consolation game

WHITTEMORE — AuGres-Sims girls' basketball team beat the Oscoda Owls 43-23 in the Whittemore-Presccott Holiday Tournament consolation game on Dec. 23.

AGS coach Steve Gingerich said his team came out flat against the Owls, which he attributed to yesterday's physically draining game against the Cardinals. However, he said they settled in nicely as the game went along, even without one of its top players — Ashli Maser — who was out sick.

"We had better shooting from our role players," Gingerich said. "We're usually a 3-player team, but we played a good team game today."

On Dec. 22 in the opening game of the holiday tournament, Gingerich pulled the Wolverines off the court after he said he became frustrated with the degree of physical play that was allowed to continue even after two AGS players suffered bloody noses and another suffered with massive bruising on her legs.

"I wanted to talk to the refs (about the situation)," he said, adding the referees wouldn't speak to him, so he made the decision to pull the girls off the court.

"We were getting physically beat up," Gingerich said. "We had four starters out and two of the six girls left had four fouls. So we would have been done in another 30 seconds anyway."
