Alcona keeps win streak alive after scare at WP

WHITTEMORE — Alcona's girls’ basketball team has been hitting its stride in the late season, but Whittemore-Prescott nearly put the brakes on the Tigers' win streak before Alcona pulled out a 47-44 victory.

W-P took a 14-6 first quarter lead behind Kayla Camp's eight points, but Alcona put together a big second quarter for a 23-19 halftime lead.

The Cards went inside to Cory Durham in the second half, and the senior center responded with 14 of her 15 points. But W-P had only one other field goal in the second half -- a third quarter triple from Emily Forton -- and Alcona hit 7-of-10 free throws in the fourth quarter to hold on to the win.

Alexa LeCureux led Alcona (8-8) with 14 points, including 4-of-4 at the line in the fourth quarter.

Durham scored 15 and Camp 13 for the Cardinals (1-15).
