Arenac County students win poster contest, bikes
ALGER — Two students from Arenac County will be riding in style, well, once the snow melts that is.
Vika Huber, 9, of AuGres-Sims Elementary, and Austin Hlinka, 9, of Sterling Elementary, were the two winners of the Sterling Area Dental Clinic, Crest and Oral B poster contest. Both students were selected from entries by 170 third grade students from Au Gres-Sims, Arenac Eastern, Standish-Sterling Area, and Whittemore Prescott school districts.
Pam Heinrich, dental hygienist, said Huber and Hlinka’s posters were chosen because they stood out from the rest.
“Every poster we got was great, but for some reason these two stood out to us,” she said.
Hlinka said he had a feeling he might win the contest.
“My parents both told me that I could win,” he said with a grin. “I just had a feeling.”
Huber was too shy to comment to the Independent, but said she was happy to win to everyone in the room.
February was Dental Health Month, and Heinrich said the clinic has been involved teaching students about good dental health for the past 23 years, but this is the first that the clinic featured a bicycle giveaway.
“We got some funding help from Crest, and we were able to purchase the bikes for the winners,” she said.
For this year’s contest, students were required to incorporate good oral hygiene, dental visits, and healthy foods on the posters.
Larry Eisher, territory manager for Crest, said it’s important for children to learn about dental health, and good habits early in their lives.
“Kids are at that crucial age where they need to be educated about these things,” he said. “They need to learn proper habits early in their lives.”
Eisher said he hoped that winning the bikes would be something both children would enjoy.
“I hope that this is something that they will remember for the rest of their lives,” he said.
