AuGRES — The AuGres City Council elected Keith Edmunds as its new council member at its regular meeting on Tuesday, June 7.
The council elected Edmunds, 40, to replace Greg Dittenber, who stepped down earlier this year for personal reasons.
Edmunds will complete the remainder of the term, which ends in May 2012.
Edmunds, who retired from the Navy after 20 years as a sailor, said Mayor Lavern Dittenber approached him during the Memorial Day parade in AuGres, in which he was participating.
“He (Lavern Dittenber) and I had a conversation about the position and went from there,” he said.
Edmunds said he accepted the city council position to help make a difference in the community where he was born and raised.
“My family has lived here for generations,” he said. “If you want to make a change you can’t just sit around and wait, you have to step up.”
LaVern Dittenber said he believes Edmunds will do a good job for the city.
“I am sure that he will be an excellent council member,” he said.
Edmunds said he will bring a different perspective to the board.
“I spent time traveling the world and this country while in the Navy,” he said. “I think that I have an outsider’s perspective on how things run in other areas, and I can bring some out-of-the-box thinking to the council that can be helpful.”
Edmunds said he plans on taking time to learn while on the board, adding that he believes he will be able to make a positive impact on AuGres soon.
“The first thing I want to do is settle in. I can’t come in and start making rash decisions,” he said. “I want to at least make a small impact when I start.”
Edmunds joins Dittenber, Robert Woolever, Tom Ennes and Clifford Warr on the council.
