AuGRES — AuGres-Sims’s (AGS) newly hired superintendent, Anne Doriean, won’t be wearing the principal and superintendent hat, like recently-retired superintendent Gary Marchel did last year, now that the district has hired Chad Zeien as principal, a position that was vacant last school year.

“Adding back our principal will allow the district to place more focus on improving the academic success of AGS students. While our MEAP scores are already the best in the area, there are still opportunities for improvement,” said AGS Board of Education member Robert Lutz in an e-mail. “Other focuses will be rounding out our curriculum and freeing up more of the superintendent’s time to focus on financial and overall district management issues.”

According to Lutz, Zeien was hired on Monday, June 15 on a one-year contract, which begins July 1. His starting salary will be $67,500, Lutz added.

There was no shortage of candidates for the position, which was vacated when former AGS Principal Pam Morris was offered a superintendent position at another district.

“The district received 18 applications. A committee comprised of staff, board and community members met to review the applications,” Lutz said, adding the field was then narrowed to three who were interviewed by the committee. “Mr. Zeien stood out from the other two candidates in the following areas: his strong loyalty to the district, his demonstrated personal rapport with the staff and community, his obvious desire to succeed as an administrator and finally, Mr. Zeien’s known work ethic and commitment to the success of his students, all lent to the committee’s final decision.”

Zeien, who is no stranger to the AGS district, received his Bachelor of Science in 1994 from Grand Valley State University, substitute taught at four different districts from 1994-95, was an at-risk instructor in 1995 at Lincoln-Alcona Elementary, and was hired by AGS as an elementary teacher in 1995. He received his Masters in the Art of Education in 2008.
