AuGres cancels appreciation dinner

AuGRES — It’s been a longstanding tradition for the city of AuGres to honor its volunteers who participate in the operation of the city, but for 2009, the AuGres Appreciation Dinner is cancelled.

City Manager Pat Killingbeck said the annual dinner has been held for about 45 years and cost about $2,000 annually.

“For this year, because of the economy, we’ve decided not to hold it,” Killingbeck said. “We’ve just been cutting back in light of things that are happening in our economy. … We’ve been eliminating some non-essential items and we will continue to do so.

“As a municipality, we only have two sources of income – property tax and revenue sharing,” she continued. “And both of those are down.”

According to Killingbeck, the only board or commission that receives any sort of compensation throughout the year in AuGres is city council. Its members receive $30 per meeting.

Boards that attended past Appreciation Dinners included the city’s planning commission and zoning board of appeals, Killingbeck said, adding other city operations, such as the AuGres-Sims Police Department, were also invited.

The dinner was cancelled at the city council meeting on Nov. 3.
