AuGRES — Community leaders from AuGres will be swapping roles with leaders from another city — well, at least for one day.

At the AuGres city commissioners meeting held on Tuesday, Jan. 4, the commissioners decided to participate in the program called Mayor Exchange with another community. The city that AuGres will swap leaders with has yet to be determined.

City Manager Patricia Killingbeck said that AuGres has participated in the Mayor Exchange program in the past, but has gotten away from it in the past few years.

“This program is very educational,” she said. “We travel to communities across the state and tour their facilities and see if we can apply anything they do to what we are doing here.”

Mayor Exchange is a program suggested for communities by the Michigan Municipal League. Killingbeck said AuGres has swapped with cities like Pinconning, Rogers City, Lexington, and Southgate, near Detroit.

“Some of the people we have swapped with actually bought property here after the exchange,” she said.

Mayor Exchange is held in May in conjunction with Michigan Week. Killingbeck said when AuGres community leaders go to another city, they take a tour of how the city operates.

“We look at how they operate things like, their public safety, water plants, and sewers,” she said. “When they come here, we show them how we do things. We also take them on a riverboat ride, and we have a picnic in the park.”

Killingbeck said that the Mayor Exchange is fun, and she is glad that AuGres is involved again this year.

“I am excited,” she said. “After three or four years of not participating, it will be fun to see what other communities are doing.”
