Auction to raise money for hospital equipment, renovations

PINCONNING — The St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital is holding its 27th annual Development Fund Auction Thursday, Sept. 19 at the Cheesehouse in Pinconning.

Community Relations Manager Holly Shillair said proceeds from the auction will go into the hospital’s development fund, which is used to purchase new equipment or make renovations when they are needed.

“For example, two years ago our development fund was used to purchase a digital mammography machine,” she said. “However, we can also use it to add on.”

Shillair added that in 2006, development fund monies were used to build a corridor for an MRI unit that was being installed at SMMSH.

Revenue from the project is not earmarked for a specific project, but used to increase the development fund, Shillair said.

“It goes directly into the fund, and then when we have a project that comes along, it will go toward that,” she said.

She added that the hospital’s goal for the auction is to raise about $15,000.

At the auction, guests can bid on items via two types of auctions, Shillair said.

“We have both live and silent auctions,” she said. “There are more than 100 items on the auction block, so people can bid through the silent auction or the live auction.”

All of the items up for auction are donated, according to Shillair.

The auction is one of two yearly fundraisers for the hospital’s development fund, Shillair said.

“We have two special event fundraisers that we hold annually,” she said. “There’s the auction and then there’s the Living Legends Ball, which is held usually in the spring.”

The auction is free to attend, but Shillair said a dinner that is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. costs $15.

Shillair said well over 100 people attend the fundraiser annually.

“We plan for about 150 and we get right around that number,” she said.

The event is scheduled to run from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Cheesehouse is located at 770 E. Pinconning Rd.
