Be sure to vote Aug. 7

This Tuesday, you have a chance to make a difference in your community. You can make that difference by going to the polls and exercising your right to vote.

Tuesday, Aug. 7, is the primary election for state and local candidates. Some races will be decided this Tuesday, as some only have opposition within one party. In other races, the primary will set the stage for who will face whom in the November general election.

The right to vote is one of the most important rights we have as Americans, and one that not enough people take seriously. It’s astonishing how low a “good” voter turnout actually is.

Our job, as Americans, is to hire these politicians to run our government. These are the people who will create policy, and manage our tax dollars for the next two to four years. We are essentially the employer, and they are the candidates for these jobs. We should treat elections with the same level of care and responsibility as we would if we were hiring these people to run our company.

The decisions we make this Tuesday will affect our community in some way. That is, if we make a decision at all.

We hear people complain about government a lot. But are those people who are complaining actually voting in the elections? Many are not.

This is your chance to set the course for the future, and we hope everyone takes it seriously.

Last week, we ran responses from many of our local candidates to give you the information you need to make an informed decision. But we suggest you don’t stop there. Seek out the candidates. Ask them questions. Treat it like a job interview. You wouldn’t hire someone to work for you if you didn’t know anything about them, would you? Then why would you vote for someone you don’t know anything about?

We aren’t here to tell you who to vote for. We just want to provide you with the information you need to vote. We hope you do the rest.

Please remember to vote Aug. 7. It is your duty, as an American.
