Bee Healthy run/walk returns for fourth year
STANDISH — Casual and competitive runners and walkers will gather at St. Mary’s of Michigan Standish Hospital Aug. 9 for the fourth annual Bee Healthy for Life two-mile run/walk.
SMMSH Exercise Specialist Tonya Herner said the run/walk was introduced as part of the hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration and, due to the community response, has become an annual event.
“It started four years ago at the hospital’s 50th anniversary, in celebration of the hospital’s 50th anniversary, and we just felt it would be a good thing to continue with our community,” she said.
Participants will start at the hospital’s family medicine practice parking lot, and then run, jog or walk one mile down Airpark Drive before turning around and returning to the hospital grounds. Herner said she expects upwards of 80 people to participate in the race.
“Normally we get between 60 and 80 people,” she said. “For the 50-year celebration, we had well over 100, but that was because of the 50th anniversary.”
This year’s event will include electronic timing, as runners and walkers will have chips on their numbered bibs, Herner said. The electronic timing system will provide more accurate times for racers, she said.
Medals will be awarded to the top three men and women in each age division. However, the race is not all about running the fastest time, Herner said.
“We definitely get competitive people, but then we also get people who are just out for the fun of the day,” she said.
The run/walk is two miles, rather than a more common competitive distance, to keep it family- friendly, Herner said.
“We continue to promote it as a family event,” she said. “That’s why we keep it as a two-mile walk/run, because we get a lot of families and children to come out. “
The race is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., rain or shine. Registration starts at 8 a.m. the day of the race. People can preregister by going to the hospital’s website,stmarysmichigan.org/
Standish, to download a registration form. Registration forms are also available in the main lobby at the hospital. Participation in the run/walk is $10 per person.
