ARENAC COUNTY — The budgeting process was in full swing in the Arenac County Courthouse on Nov. 10 when the Board of Commissioners met with several department heads to iron out next year’s budget, while also reducing expenses over $105,000.

Commissioner Ronald Branda estimated, prior to the department heads coming before the board to plead their case for funding, that current 2009 budget requests were at approximately $5,335,914 while projected revenues were only at about $5,097,740 – a difference of $238,174.

But Branda was optimistic about the budget.

“Everybody (department heads) was pretty conservative with their requests,” Branda said.

County Treasurer Dennis Stawowy commended department heads as well, saying they did a “very lean job of turning in their requests.”

During the meetings with the department heads, the Board of Commissioner discussed next year’s revenues and expenses while using this year and last year’s numbers as a guide. The Board met with the heads of Arenac County Child Care, the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, 81st District Court, 23rd Circuit Court, Emergency Management, Friend of the Court, the Sheriff’s Office, Register of Deeds and the Equalization Department.

Out of the nine departments, only Equalization’s 2009 budget wasn’t cut, as Board Chairman Raymond Daniels says approximately $2,100 was actually added to its budget.
