Candidates file for school board election

Five people go for three seats

STANDISH — The filing deadline for the Aug. 3, primary election for Standish-Sterling School District School Board candidates passed at 4 p.m. May 19. The election for these positions was made necessary by the recent recall of three board members.

According to the Arenac County Clerks Office, there are five registrants, who are hoping to fill the three spots left vacant by recalled members Brenda Golimbieski, Kim Koin, and Gary McFarland.

Two people are running uncontested for two of the terms, while the remaining three are vying for the same seat.

Ronald Bartlett is running uncontested for the partial team ending Dec., 31, 2010, while Melanie Raymond-Sobieray is running for the partial term that ends on the same date in 2012.

Allen Howard Schmidt, Annette Ratajczak, and Sarah Brandenburg will compete against each other for the partial term ending Dec. 31, 2011.

More than 2,810 valid signatures were needed for a recall petition that put the three former board members up for the recall vote, which took place May 4.

Although many reasons where cited for the recall language, a hearing that took place in October of last year only approved the last submitted statement which stated “Board of Education special meeting held Aug. 18, 2009 — a motion was made and passed, but was ignored and public comment was disallowed in violation of the Board’s Policies and Procedures.”

One day after the election the votes were certified, and all three were recalled.

Golimbieski was taken off the board with 720 votes cast in favor, while 598 were against it, while Kim Koin was recalled with 767 against her along with 552 people who didn’t want her to leave the board.

Gary McFarland was also recalled with 775 in favor of him being removed and 537 against it.
