Car Cruisers make donation to AuGres-Sims band
AuGRES — At the AuGres-Sims homecoming game against Atlanta, the AuGres Car Cruisers presented a $2,500 check to band director Kim Gordon for her and the band’s help during the AuGres Car Cruise and Car Show.
Cruisers President Dennis Nixon said the group has been getting help from Gordon and the band for a number of years and wanted to support their hard work with a donation.
“She really stepped up to the plate,” Nixon said about Gordon. “She has students running concessions, admissions, and doing cleanup.”
Nixon said there are only about 10 active AuGres Car Cruisers members. He said that without help from Gordon and the band, the annual AuGres Car Cruise and Car Show would not happen.
“We asked for help from a number of people in the community,” he said. “These events are not easy to put on. The (band’s) help really takes a load off.”
Nixon said the Cruisers are glad to give the band around 40 percent of the money they raise. He added that the Cruisers are looking to donate the majority of the earnings to the band.
“These are excellent kids,” Nixon said. “(Gordon) is a fantastic band director, and the things she does around the community are all donated. She deserves something for her effort.”
Another reason Nixon said the AuGres Car Cruisers enjoy giving money to the band is because they make the community proud.
“I am proud to see children in this community who are responsible,” he said. “They get the job done and make you feel proud to live here (AuGres).”
Nixon said the money given to Gordon and the band goes toward the needs of the band. He said without the support of sponsors, the donation to the band would not be possible, as well as the construction of a new pavilion near the AuGres River.
