Closing spurs activism

Catholic Church leads the way

STANDISH — The message on the sign out front of the Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Standish is clear – “Save Standish Max.”

Directly inside the church are several stacks of petitions that hold up to 30 signatures each in an effort to rally support behind the prison, which was ordered to be closed before the end of fiscal year 2009 by the Michigan Department of Corrections on June 5.

Father James Fitzpatrick, the Priest at Resurrection, says the reasoning behind his efforts is simple.

“To save the jobs, since we live in such a poor county, and the prison being a main employer, for us to lose this would be devastating to the county,” he said.

Fitzpatrick says he is working on getting someone to make calls from the church’s Parish Office to businesses throughout the county to have the petitions available inside and to write “Save Standish Max Come in sign petition!” on business signs.
