Coaches Classic returns for 30th year
STANDISH — The Coaches Classic golf outing Saturday, July 19, at the Pine River Golf Course will raise funds for football and athletic programs at Standish-Sterling Central High School.
Former SSC football coach and event organizer Paul Walderzak said this is the 30th annual Coaches Classic.
“To do it this long is pretty special and a lot of the guys are playing in it that have always played in it,” he said. “We’d kind of like to see new people come in and participate.”
The golf outing is primarily a football fundraiser, Walderzak said, but funds are also used to purchase weight room equipment, which is used by athletes in several sports.
“The proceeds have been used to help out other sports and also fund a lot of the purchases for the weight room,” he said.
Walderzak said the funds from the outing have helped make incidental purchases for the football team over the years, including helmet stickers, meals, awards and T-shirts.
“Sometimes we need to pick up some extra balls or helmets or maybe some shoulder pads,” he said.
“If we have a very, very long trip like the one up to Menominee last year, and we rent a charter bus, the school doesn’t pay for that,” Walderzak said. “That comes out of our fund.”
About 35 teams typically participate in the Coaches Classic. Walderzak said numbers have been down a bit the last couple of years.
The outing is a scramble format with a shotgun start, Walderzak said. It begins at 8:30 a.m., and there will be beer, pop and football on the course, and a dinner afterward, he said. The top three teams will receive trophies, and there will be a first-place trophy for the top women’s team, according to Walderzak.
Skins, raffles and a hot box drawing are also planned, Walderzak said.
The outing costs $300 per team or $75 per person. For more information, contact Walderzak at 989-846-0433. Teams can register the day of the tournament, but Walderzak said a phone call alerting him that they plan to register Saturday is appreciated.
