County employee embezzlement update
Proceedings adjourned until end of month, March
ARENAC COUNTY — Former Public Guardians Robert Romps and Sherilyn Jones and Jones’ mother Sallie Lebeau were all on the Arenac County 81st District Court docket for Jan. 4, due to their roles in an alleged embezzlement operation in the county's public guardian office, but the court proceedings for all three were adjourned.
Jones faces one count of criminal enterprise; two counts of embezzlement by a public official; one count of embezzlement from vulnerable adults; and one count of conspiring to embezzle over $200 but less than $1,000. A status conference for Jones scheduled for Jan. 4 was adjourned until Jan. 28. Jones is represented by Attorney Kim Higgs.
Romps, charged with one count of embezzlement by a public official over $50, also had a status conference adjourned until Jan. 28. Attorney Garner Dewey is representing Romps, who replaced Jones as Arenac County Public Guardian in September 2009.
Charges against Romps and Jones are felonious.
Lebeau is charged with the misdemeanor charge of conspiring to embezzle over $200 but less than $1,000. She is scheduled for a pretrial on March 15 after a pretrial was adjourned Monday. Attorney Nathan Tyler is representing her.
