County fireworks fizzle out
AuGRES — County residents looking for a free fireworks show this Fourth of July will have to explore outside the county boundaries as the show held in AuGres the past five years is cancelled this year.
“We are cancelled,” said Arenac County Celebration Fund member, Kim Forton. “We’re just going to shoot for it next year and try earlier to get fundraisers going.
“We’ll have it next year. It’ll be big. It’ll be a big bang.”
Forton says the Celebration Fund’s main fundraiser attempt, a golf outing, didn’t draw enough entries to ensure the $12,000 regularly spent on fireworks each year would be obtained.
“That’s what we were kind of banking on, was that golf outing,” she said, adding the golf outing was cancelled as well.
According to Forton, business owners who have donated to this year’s fireworks show will be reimbursed.
“We’re going to give most of it (money) back, because we have the checks, we haven’t cashed them yet,” she said. Forton added some business owners who were solicited for donations may request that the money stay with the Celebration Fund.
One issue in successfully pulling off the fireworks, Forton says, is the minimal size of the fund, which besides Forton has only one other member that is active in organizing the fireworks.
“Hopefully we can get more volunteers for next year,” she said.
To volunteer for the Arenac County Celebration Fund or to share fundraising ideas, which Forton says she is seeking, call 989-876-8131.
Those looking for a free fireworks shows close to home this year can go to Tawas’s show on July 4 at the Tawas City Park or Skidway Lake’s show on July 5 at Newman Park.
