Donald Leslie Stewart, 86, of Flushing and Largo, Fla., passed away peacefully with his family by his side at the Opis Tierra Pines Nursing Home in Largo on Tuesday, March 7, 2017.

Don was born Dec. 15, 1930, in Mount Morris to Wallace and Zaida (Whittmore) Stewart. After high school graduation, he enlisted and proudly served our country in the U.S. Army near the end of the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge from the military, Don furthered his education in college and earned his master’s degree. He was employed as a math teacher and golf coach at Flint Southwestern High School for many years. Don had many interests in life; however, golfing was by far one of his favorites.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce (Ostrander) Stewart, on Aug. 24, 2001; and two brothers and two sisters, Thomas, Frances, Wallace and Betty.

Don is survived by his loving daughter, Sue Ann (William) Smith of Sea Isle, N.J.; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for Tuesday, March 21, 2017, at 1 p.m. at the Buresh Funeral Home in Twining. His family will welcome friends at the funeral home that day from 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Interment with military honors will take place in the Cedar Valley Cemetery following the funeral.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to express their condolences are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to either the Alzheimer’s Association or to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in his name. An online guest registry is available at
