EDITORIAL – People of Arenac County deserve open access to river
The Deep River Township Planning Commission’s desire to establish two public access points along the Rifle River will give people of the township and county something they deserve – free, outdoor recreation.
The Rifle River is one of nature’s greatest gifts to Arenac County, and by looking at the businesses along it that offer canoeing, kayaking and tubing trips, it’s obvious the mighty river can draw a crowd.
However, the river doesn’t only belong to a few businesses, and living along it doesn’t make it yours.
Simply put, the 60-mile river belongs to everyone and people who live near it that want to fish, canoe, or just wade in the water, should get the chance to do so freely, not only whenever someone else says they may.
As long as people are respectful of the private property around the public sites, and friendly to the environment while visiting, then enjoying the Rifle River is a perk that should come with calling Deep River Township home.
