EDITORIAL — SVSU would be welcome addition to county

Once all the formalities are nailed down, a Saginaw Valley State University research center on Charity Island would be a neat little hub of Arenac County.

Let’s get a few things straight. It’s not going to rescue the economy, nor is it going to be a community college-type facility where local students could study.

But having a research center on an island smack-dab in the middle of the Saginaw Bay may provide scientific breakthroughs in water quality studies and forestry projects relating to the island’s flora and fauna.

Students will be isolated on the island, analyzing the water surrounding them, seeing the undeveloped areas of the island with wide-open eyes and studying the results of tests – who knows what they may discover?

Plus, with E. Coli at the Singing Bridge Access and muck emergency experienced in Bay City, studying the waters of the bay is something that can only help the overall water quality around Arenac County.

Hopefully all goes well in the next couple of months and soon, Whitney Township will have a new attraction.

At what price? Charity Island is one of the few *mostly* untouched areas near Arenac/Iosco counties. (save the inexplicably built cabins of a proud few)
