East Shore Wind Symphony announces concerts

STANDISH – The East Shore Wind Symphony, sponsored by the Northeast Michigan Arts Council, will kick off the season with their first performance Sunday, Nov. 6 at 3 p.m. at the Standish-Sterling Performing Arts Center.

The concert, entitled “Music New & Old,” will feature compositions ranging from the early 1900s to works written in the past three years.

Music director Doug Burtch said when selecting music for the ensemble he tries to find works that interest both the audience and musicians.

“Our November program promises not to disappoint either group,” he said.

Burtch said two additional concerts make up the remainder of the season.

“On Dec. 10 at 7 p.m. a perennial community favorite, ‘Welcome Yule’ is set and will include holiday favorites,” he said. “Our other concert, entitled ‘Showstoppers,’ is set for April 28 at 3 p.m. and will feature the premier performing men’s a cappella chorus, the MountainTown singers.”

In addition to preparing for the regular season, the East Shore Wind Symphony has been preparing for their performance at the 2012 Michigan Music Conference.

“We received word in early July that we had been selected to perform for the conference,” Burtch said. “It’s a very high honor.”

The band will present “Band Music off the Beaten Path: Hidden Gems of the Past & Present,” on Jan. 20, 2012 at the Grand Plaza Ballroom at the Amway Grand Hotel.

“We try to keep the concert admission at an affordable rate and hope that patrons will be generous when we ask for additional donations,” Burtch said. “This year we will be offering professionally recorded CD’s of the band’s performances as a gift for $20 to help us meet expenses.”

Admission for the Nov. 6 concert is $5 and tickets are available at the door. For more information, contact the Northeast Michigan Arts Council at 989-846-4577.
