Fire death ruled a suicide

SIMS TOWNSHIP — The death of 54-year-old David Kraatz in a house fire on Aug. 6 is considered a suicide according to the results of an investigation performed by Michigan State Police Fire Marshall Dale Hardy and a pathologist who accompanied him.

“They (Hardy and the pathologist) think that he set the fire first, then he shot himself,” said Arenac County Sheriff James Mosciski, who the investigation’s findings are being communicated through. “It was a suicide.”

Mosciski says the investigators also reported finding a gun in Kraatz’s hand and a contact wound in the temple.

The fire occurred on East Michigan Avenue in Sims Township.
