PINCONNING — The fifth annual A Night in June event, promoting mental health awareness, will be held on Thursday, June 23 at Pinconning City Park.

A Night in June will be held from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. and is free to the public.

Diane Palmer, public relations specialist for Bay-Arenac Behavioral Health, which is hosting the event along with the Standish Friends Society, said the event will feature an acoustic musical concert with local performers including folk singers, duos, groups playing originals and traditional selections.

David Friday, customer services representative at the Bay-Arenac Behavioral Health said the event began to help positively promote mental health and illness.

“This event began because there was a large number of suicides in the area, including Arenac County,” he said. “We wanted to start a positive, fun, family event that made people happy.”

Friday said he has not seen many positive messages in the media about mental illness.

“It is not all bad,” he said. “We want to get that positive message out that there is hope for people with mental illnesses. It’s real, it’s common and it is treatable.”

Friday said his hope for people with mental illness is that they are not afraid to seek help.

“It’s OK to reach out and ask for help,” he said.

Along with free music, Palmer said A Night in June will also feature food at minimal cost. She said hot dogs, popcorn, shortcake, baked goods, lemonade and ice tea are some of the items that will be available.

Friday said the event has continued to grow over the years.

“Last year we has upwards of 300 people attend,” he said.

Friday said that informational packets will be available for those looking for more information on mental illness.

“We want people to know there is help available,” he said. “We will have information there with numbers and websites that people can look into.”
