Gross and Short post top 10 finish in canoe marathon


OSCODA — Pinconning's Brad Gross and Kawkawlin's Tony Short combined forces and finished seventh in the 62nd annual Weyhaeuser AuSable River Canoe Marathon, which started Saturday in Grayling and ended Sunday in Oscoda.

Gross and Short finished the 120-mile race in 14 hours, 46 minutes, 52 seconds. There were 92 canoes in the field.

Spring Arbor's Andy Triebold and teammate Steve LaJoie of Quebec, Canada, won the race in 14:17.32.

Whittemore's Derek Harrison and Clare's Travis Harrison finished 53rd (16:42.58). Prescott's Rick Gillings and Oscoda's Kari Wainwright placed 69th (17:35.33), while Twining's John Pavlik and Whittemore's Dylan DeBeover finished 72nd (17:42.39).

There was another local team that raced in the marathon that was not mentioned in this article. Twining's John Langstaff and Tawas's Kevin Ornatowski placed 43rd (16:18:21).
