Hale remains undefeated after topping AE

HALE — Hale's boys’ basketball team used a huge first half run Monday to build an insurmountable lead and claimed a 51-30 North Star League victory over Arenac Eastern.

Hale led 30-8 at the half as Drew Compau and Lane Self combined for 18 points before halftime.

"We had good energy ... and played good defense in the first half," said Hale coach Ryan Parkinson. "Drew shot the ball well for us tonight ... and Lane had another good game with Christian Mudry still out."

That said, Eastern didn't quit on the game and outscored Hale 24-21 after halftime.

"Arenac played hard and outplayed us in the second half," Parkinson said. "I know they are struggling but Coach Morgan had to feel good about their effort in the second half."

That he did.

"In the second half we played much better," Morgan said. "For some reason about halfway through the third quarter we started hitting shots.

"We still only hit 28 percent for the game but I did see some good things from the seniors. The entire team hustled and I saw them sprawled out on the floor several times going for loose balls. Hopefully we build on that."

AE was just 3-of-17 from the floor in the first half, while Hale shot 43 percent from the floor.

Compau finished with 17 points, Self scored 12 and Nick Katterman had 12 rebounds for Hale (8-0, 5-0 North Star League).

Kevin Kovacs led Arenac Eastern (1-6, 0-4) with nine points.
