Helen I. Pula, 96, of Omer passed away Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017, at her home with her loving family at her side following a brief illness.
She was born in Sterling on June 29, 1920, to the late Andrew and Victoria (Watch) Smyl. She married Walter Pula on August 24, 1940, at St. Florian Catholic Church. He preceded her in death Oct. 17, 2003. Helen and Walter owned and operated the Pula’s Market in Omer for 35 years. She was a member of Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church, Arenac Historical Society, Omer Secret Sisters and the Knights of Columbus Auxiliary. Helen will be remembered by her family for her attendance at hundreds of basketball games supporting her family. She loved play cards, bingo, baking lots of pies and making the best sauerkraut. She loved God, friends, the Omer community and the Detroit Tigers. Helen’s greatest love was cherishing her family and the family gatherings.
She is survived by her loving family, daughter, Alice Sproule; grandchildren, Scott Schell, Greg and Stacie Schell; great-grandchildren, Jordan, Luke and Kenzie; son, Richard and Mary Pula; grandchildren, Sean and Jamie Pula; great-grandchildren, Liam and Finley; grandchild, Ryan and Ashley Pula; great-grandchildren, Logan, Natalie and Henry; grandchild, Tess and Dustin Daniels; great-grandchildren, Christian and Lorelei; daughter, Joann and Mick Swartz; grandchild, Dennis and Sierra Swartz; great-grandchildren, Noah and Madilyn; grandchild, Laurie and Jim Badgerow; great-grandchildren, Brooke and Adam; daughter, Shirley and Larry Curriston; grandchild, Ellie and Nick Haman; great-grandchildren, Ezra, Mason and Noelle; grandchild, Chelsea and Nick Bartman; great-grandchild, Nathaniel; grandchild, Andy and Liz Curriston; grandchild, Peggy Curriston; daughter, Carol and Eugene Kauffman; grandchildren, Hannah Kaufman, Isaiah and Jackie Kauffman and Lydia Kauffman; daughter, Vickie and Richard Jurek; grandchild, Danielle and Kevin Nienhuis; great-grandchild, Keegan; grandchild, Taylor and Zack Neid; brother-in-law, Mitch and Elaine Pula; sisters-in-law, Jean Pula and Pat Pula; also many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years; a grandson, Nathan Curriston; and sisters, Celcia and Steve Sherman, Jean and Frank Piet and Mary and Joe Cramer.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, March 17, 2017, at 11 a.m. at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. David Parsch presiding with burial in Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Cemetery. Family will be present at the Standish Chapel on Thursday, March 16, 2017, from 2-8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. On Friday Mrs. Pula will lie in state at the church from 10 a.m. until time of Mass. Those wishing an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the city of Omer playground equipment and the Arenac County Historical Society.
