MIO — Arenac Eastern girls basketball coach Butch Beckham had wondered how the Eagles would respond to their first loss of the season.

AE answered that question to his liking on Friday, defeating Mio AuSable 63-27 to earn a North Star League road victory.

"It was what I was hoping for," Beckham said. "They played everything against us. We saw two zone (defenses) and man, but we got after them. I thought we played pretty well both offensively and defensively."

After edging to a 9-5 first quarter lead, the Eagles opened the game up with an 18-4 second quarter for a 27-9 margin at the half and outscored the Thunderbolts 36-18 in the second half.

Chelsea Dery had 19 points, 11 rebounds and four assists, Briana Dery added 13 points, 13 rebounds and nine steals and Maddie Nelson had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Erin Ecker added eight points and Danielle Jurek had four assists.

Kelsie Blamer led Mio with 13 points and Desiree Knepp added six.

The Eagles (7-1, 4-1 NSL) host Hale on Tuesday while Mio (2-5, 1-3) is at AuGres-Sims.
