Man shoots off rifle outside house

Leads cops on a chase

STERLING — According to Arenac County Undersheriff Don McIntyre, a 23-year-old Midland man caused quite a scary moment after the Sheriff’s Department received a call about a man walking around and shooting an AR-15 military rifle in front of his relatives’ house, while intoxicated.

The incident happened at 2:53 a.m. on the 300 hundred block of City Limits Road in Sterling, when a complaint was lodged about a subject shooting a military style rifle in the front yard of a relative, according to McIntyre.

“That was kind of a scary call for us,” he said.

When the deputies were on way to the scene, Central Dispatch notified the Sheriff’s Department that the suspect was on the move.

Once officers engaged the subject in a traffic stop by turning on their units’ sirens and lights, McIntyre said that it took about a mile and a half for the officers to get the suspect to pull over.

The suspect came to a stop on South Melita Road, near City Limits Road.

The officers heard the gun being loaded, McIntyre said. They then ordered the Midland man out of the car at gunpoint.

He was taken into arrest without any further incident, according to McIntyre.

Through no shots were fired at the officers, and no one got hurt, McIntyre said that the rifle was found loaded in the vehicle.

McIntyre said he is just glad everyone is OK.

“Anytime no one is injured in an incident like this it’s a good day,” he said. “Our deputies are exposed to danger.”

The suspect will face five charges in court, as he was arrested and charged with operating while intoxicated, fleeing and eluding officers, possession of firearms while intoxicated, possession with a loaded firearm in a vehicle, and possession of a firearm while in commission of a felony.
