Meet the Bishop

STANDISH — Newly appointed Bishop of the Saginaw Diocese, The Most Reverend Joseph Cistone, met members of the Diocese and worshiped with them at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church in Standish on Wednesday.

Cistone’s stop in Standish was the first of seven regional masses of thanksgiving throughout the Diocese, which Resurrection Priest James Fitzpatrick says includes around 109 churches.

“Resurrection Church was chosen for this region because it’s one of the bigger churches in the region,” he said, adding that holding the mass in Standish would draw Catholic parishioners from all over Arenac County and other areas.

The masses of thanksgiving, according to Fitzpatrick, are a special occasion.

“It’s a very important thing because it is giving people the first chance to meet their Bishop personally,” he said. “The Bishop is the main shepherd. He’s the one who oversees the entire Diocese.

"In fact, the Bishop of each Diocese is appointed by the Pope."

Also, the Bishop of the Saginaw Diocese doesn’t come around everyday.

Fitzpatrick says the former Bishop, the Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson, visited Standish only twice recently that he can remember. Those two times were four years ago, when Bishop Carlson blessed Resurrection of the Lord during its 25th anniversary and a few months ago, Fitzpatrick says, for a confirmation ceremony.

Bishop Cistone was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI on May 20 and was installed on July 28.
