My competitive side takes a hit on the course

Golf may be the most challenging thing I have ever done for fun.

I have always been a super competitive person. I have been that way since I can remember.

As a competitive person, I have my good moments and my bad moments.

The good moments come when I am on the basketball court or on the go-kart track. Although I might be wrong, in my head there is no one better than me. I am going to give it my all and take the victory if I can. And if I lose, it’s OK, I will get you next time. (It’s a good thing I have never had to play one-on-one with Kobe Bryant. That might get ugly on my end.)

There is nothing that brings out the bad side of my competitive nature more than being on a golf course. No matter how hard I try, I am going to end up saying a bad word or two.

Unlike most sports, to be good in golf you have to slow down. It is such a mental game that if there is one small thing that bothers you, it can ruin your whole day.

Usually, my day is ruined after the first swing I take.

I am the worst golfer you have ever seen, but I really try hard.

The worst part is, I know what my problems are on the course, but I can’t do much to fix them.

1. I am left-handed, so none of my friends can help me. (Anyone who is born left-handed is doomed to a life of doing things backwards.)

2. I have a so-so set of clubs. They’re not terrible, but I don’t want to invest in a thousand-dollar set of Taylor Made clubs.

3. I don’t have a lot of time to play. Unlike basketball, I can’t just walk out my back door and play a round.

4. It takes a lot of money to play golf. I really don’t love golf that much—I want to spend my money on other things.

I really wish I could fix those points, but I can’t. So I continue to hack away at the ball and cuss at myself.

But the competitive person in me continues to want to prove that I can conquer this game and become decent at it.

Maybe someday that will happen, but if it does not, then I will stick to shooting hoops in the driveway.

Golf is not a relaxing sport. It is a frustrating one.

So if you see me on the course, keep to my right. I have a nasty slice.
