OHHS wins non-conference match-up with SSC boys

STANDISH — Ogemaw Heights built a 29-14 halftime lead over Standish-Sterling on Tuesday and held on for a 58-55 victory in the third game of the season between the two NEMC rivals. This game, however, was a non-conference contest that the two schools used to fill out their schedules and didn't count toward either team's league mark.

Alex Rose and Robby Kish combined for 17 points in the first half as Ogemaw built its lead. But after a first half in which just 13 total fouls were called, the Panthers practically lived at the free throw line in the second half, especially Mark Lorence, who was 8-of-11 at the line after halftime.

But other than Lorence, free throws killed SSC, who were 9-of-21 at the line overall.

"It was a good comeback for us, but not enough," said SSC coach Tom Murray. "Our free throws did us in. It was pretty loosely officiated and got pretty wild."

The Falcons went 6-of-9 in the fourth quarter, including 4-of-5 by Eric Noble, to hang on.

Kish finished with 14 points and Justin Wejsa added 10, including eight in the second half.

Lorence led SSC with 18, with Garrett Russell adding a season-high 10 points.

Both teams are 10-7.
