O’Reilly’s opening in Standish

STANDISH — An O’Reilly’s Auto Parts is expected to open in Standish this year, according to City Manager Curt Hillman.

Hillman unveiled the plans for the proposed building during the Standish City Council’s Jan. 21 meeting. He said it is expected to be built in the lot between Independent Bank and Rite Aid in the city.

The building will have a driveway off of Forest Street, he said, while a driveway permit for US-23 is still under discussion with the Michigan Department of Transportation. The Standish planning commission already approved the new construction, Hillman said, and there are no problems on the city’s side of things.

Ludwig & Seeley Real Estate owns the property, and found someone interested in renting out building space there, Hillman said. The real estate company will construct the building to suit the needs of O’Reilly’s and then rent out the property.

“It’s been in the works for almost a year,” Hillman said. “They submitted plans a while ago, but then it fell apart. The economy put the kibosh on it. But now I guess there’s more of a reason to do it, so they are back to it.”

He said he felt the addition of O’Reilly’s would bring new jobs to the city and is an indication of the investment the area has seen.

“It’s nice to see investment in our community, and it’s nice to see something new,” Hillman said. “We have Auburn Bean & Grain just south of town, but it’s happening in town too. With (Auto Value), O’Reillys, and now the Trading Post making an investment in its property, maybe the economy has turned around a bit for Standish.”

Work on the building is expected to start in the spring.
