Omer discusses grant for library, meets with USDA

OMER — City council members and citizens of Omer met with a representative from the USDA’s Rural Development office on Jan. 28 to discuss a possible grant for the construction of a new library.

Community Programs Specialist Adrin Wagner met with the council members and interested community members and said that the USDA could provide a grant for up to 30 percent of the total cost of the project.

Wagner said the size of the grant is determined through several factors, including the total cost of the project, the city’s median income, and the number of applications the USDA receives.

Wagner also walked the council through the parts of the pre-application, which is the first step in being considered for a grant. After the council members send in the application, they will get a response within 45 days, Wagner said.

Wagner said that after the pre-application is received and reviewed, the USDA will come out to the site to make recommendations to the projected cost that is included in the application.

The next step in the process will be to bring in an architect or engineer to determine a more accurate estimate on the cost of the building.

Wagner said there are no costs associated with filling out the pre-application, and the city can pull out at any point before closing in on the grant without any cost to them.

Through September, the USDA will be able to give away twice the amount of money in grants because of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

Omer city council is currently reviewing the pre-application.
