STANDISH — Two members of the Standish-Sterling FFA Chapter are taking on more responsibility within the organization, as juniors Karina Pierce and Kelsey Prohaska were elected as FFA Region VI officers on June 24.

Prohaska, who was elected region president, says she’s considered being a regional officer since she joined FFA in seventh grade.

“I wanted to improve our region and get more chapters involved,” Prohaska said, adding she plans on a more exciting region this year. “We’re going to hold more region activities and make competitions more comfortable. … We want to set a good example for the younger members of out chapter.”

Pierce, elected as Region VI Treasurer, says the election of the two for regional offices will reflect on the Standish chapter.

“It gets Standish more involved, obviously. Hopefully we’ll get more people to join our chapter,” she said.

But the election, which the girls said surprised and excited them, comes with additional responsibility.

“We have to plan next year’s regional competition and a decathlon. Our chapter’s never participated in it (decathlon) before, but this year our school has to run it (with two regional officers serving), so it should be fun,” Prohaska said.

On July 9-10, the girls will fulfill their first duties as Region VI officers when they attend State FFA Leadership Camp.

“We’re going to meet with state officers there and make a list of activities (for the upcoming year),” Prohaska said, adding they also plan on creating a Region VI officer meeting schedule, which could be difficult with other officers hailing from Alcona, Alpena and Benzonia.

The newly elected regional officers say they hope that FFA members in the region, which includes all chapters from Standish north, including the Upper Peninsula, can make a lot of new friends, like they have since joining FFA.

Pierce says since she joined FFA in eighth grade, in fact, her favorite part of being in the organization has been meeting new people.

“We’ve been friends with Stephenson (FFA members), at least I have, since eighth grade,” she said. Stephenson is in the U.P.

By default, Standish-Sterling FFA Advisor Ryan Stokoszynski will also serve as Region VI Advisor, Pierce says.

"It's always great when people from your chapter get some recognition form outside," Stokoszynski said. "Region VI is in for a surprise this year."

Both girls were elected over one other candidate for their respective positions.
