ITHACA — Standish-Sterling's boys opened the New Year Tuesday, Jan. 6 with a low-scoring 44-39 loss at Ithaca in a game that was rescheduled from the season's opening week.

"It was a pretty tight game throughout," said SSC coach Tom Murray. "We had a chance to tie it at the free throw line late, but we missed them and they made theirs to pull away."

Ithaca missed seven straight free throws early in the fourth quarter to give the Panthers a chance to steal a win on the road, but reversed that to hit 3-of-4 in the final minutes.

The Yellowjackets led 19-15 at the half before Creed Stapleton took over with 14 of his game-high 21 points after halftime.

Mark Lorence led the Panthers (2-1) with 10 points. Cole Walderzak added eight and Mitchell McFarland added six. The Panthers host Ogemaw Heights on Friday.
