Panthers finish second at state finals


KENT CITY — The Standish-Sterling boys track and field team took second at the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association team state finals at Kent City May 24.

SSC racked up 1,218 points, finishing second to Hillsdale.

The Panthers took first place in three events. The 4x200-meter relay team of Wyatt Bender, Tyler Walker, Jimmy Cousins and Matt Crawford completed the race in 1:32.83 to claim the top spot. Clay Walderzak swept the shot put (56-03.5) and the discus (172-03).

Athletes from SSC also finished second in two events. Cousins placed second in the 400-meter dash. Cousins, Crawford, Ben Lentz and Jordan Wells took second in the mile relay.

SSC qualified for the state finals by winning a regional meet last week in Clare.
