Panthers' volleyball hoping talent trumps experience

STANDISH – Young, but talented.

That’s how Standish-Sterling Central varsity volleyball coach Becky Murphy described her team heading into the new season.

“We’re a very young team and we’re kind of rebuilding,” she said. “We’re very talented, skill wise, across the board, and we’re strong at the net if our hitters come through for us.”

Murphy coached the junior varsity team last season, but served as the varsity coach a few years ago and returns to that position.

The Panthers lost four key players to graduation from last year’s team in Ellen Walderzak, Tara Hartley, Cassie Rhoehm and Lauren Perrin, but she still had talent back, including seniors Christy Schott, Megan Heiser and Danielle Milan. Schott is expected to play right-side hitter and will serve the team as a secondary setter, Heiser is a back row specialist and main passer, and Milan will play libero or main passer.

Juniors Christina Proulx and Kierstin Sanch are also expected to play keys roles, Proulx at middle-hitter and Sanch at outside-hitter.

Murphy’s roster consists of several other juniors, including Chelsea Szostak, Emily Meschke, Kelsey Prohaska, Jessica Feiner, Katie Ouillette, and Karina Pierce.

Brooke Bartlett, a sophomore, is expected to see plenty of action at setter.

The Panthers opened the season Saturday, Aug. 22 at the Remus Chippewa Hills Invitational where they went 0-3 in pool play before defeating Hart in the loser’s bracket semifinals, 25-16, 25-16. The Panthers finished the day with a loss to host Chippewa Hills in the loser’s bracket final, winning the first game but losing the next two.
