ALLEN PARK — The Detroit Lions named Standish-Sterling Central Coach Paul Walderzak their choice for Week 6 “High School Coach of the Week Program Presented by Motorola.”

The announcement came following SSC’s 26-16 victory over rival Pinconning in which the Panthers clinched a playoff birth. The team is currently ranked #2 in division 5 and has since won two more games including a thrashing of Bangor John Glenn to give SSC the NEMC title.

Walderzak is in his 27th season at Standish-Sterling where he has compiled a career mark of 138-108 and led the Panthers to all six of the school’s state playoff appearances. Walderzak is a graduate of Saginaw Arthur Hill where he was a member of the 1973 varsity football team that went 9-0 and outscored their opponents 443-0. That Arthur Hill team is considered by many to be the best in state history.

According to www.detroitlions.com, each week a different high school coach is selected by a panel of three newspaper writers from Saginaw, Detroit and Grand Rapids.

The winner is chosen in regards to a coach who is able to develop his players’ skills, character and discipline and exemplifies a commitment to the team, school and community.

All winning coaches receive $2,000 for their program and will be honored at an awards ceremony during the Lions-Saints game on Dec. 21.

In addition, all coaches receive a framed certificate signed by Lions’ Head Coach Rod Marinelli, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Director of Football Development Gene Washington along with a personalized game ball and “Coach of the Week” hat.
