Petting zoo added to Lions Club Harvest Bazaar

STANDISH — The Standish Lions Club has hosted its Harvest Bazaar for more than 30 years, but this year the Lions will be joined by plenty of other animals.

Lions Club member Ruth Caldwell said this year’s bazaar on Oct. 12 at the Standish Knights of Columbus Hall will include a petting zoo.

“This year we are having something new and that is a petting zoo outside the hall,” she said.

Terry Guoan, owner of Making Memories With You Petting Zoo of Standish, said the petting zoo will give children a chance to see many animals up close.

“There will be a large amount of animals there,” he said. “There are alpacas, llamas, parrots, ducks, chickens, rabbits, sheep, goats, a donkey and a calf.”

It is free to pet the animals, but people will also have the opportunity to purchase feed for them, Guoan said.

“We’ll be selling cones of feed, and half of the proceeds from that will go toward Boy Scouts of Standish,” he said. “It’s in cones, like ice cream cones. They feed it and the animal eats the whole cone.”

While the petting zoo is set up outside of the K of C Hall, inside there will be plenty to see as well, Caldwell said. The Friends of the Mary Johnston Memorial Library will be having a book sale, and several crafters will be set up selling their pieces.

“We’re going to have around 35 vendors, plus the other things,” Caldwell said. “So it should be a fun day.”

She added that the K of C Auxiliary will be selling pies and preparing lunch during the Harvest Bazaar.

Caldwell said she expects a big turnout at this year’s event.

“It always depends on the weather, but I have a feeling we’re going to get quite a few this year, though, because I’ve gotten a huge response from crafters,” she said. “We have not only our regular crafters but a lot of new ones as well.”

The Harvest Bazaar runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, contact Caldwell at 989-846-9880.
