Private companies looking at Standish Max

STANDISH — Private companies are looking into taking over and reopening the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility, and have a deadline of May 1 to submit bids to the state.

Standish City Manager Curt Hillman said for roughly the past four to six weeks, he has been in contact with a couple companies that are gathering information, including utility costs and the attitudes of people in the community toward the prison, before submitting their bids as part of a request for proposal (RFP) process.

Once the bids have been submitted, he said it would be up to the state to review them and decide whether or not to pursue privatizing the prison, which has been closed since 2009.

Hillman is upbeat about the prison’s chances of reopening.

“I still feel quite positive that something is going to happen,” Hillman said. “It may be managed by a private company, but that’s still bringing about 300 jobs back to the community.”

Hillman said the prison reopening would keep the money generated by those jobs floating around the community for a while, helping out the local economy. He also said it could lead to more families moving into the area, which in turn would benefit the local school districts with their per-pupil funding.

“I’m trying to support the companies with anything they need,” he said.

Hillman did not name the companies currently looking into making bids for the prison.
