ARENAC COUNTY — Before too long it will be July. And with July comes Relay For Life.

The Arenac County Relay For Life is starting 2011 with its soup supper, which will be held Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall in Standish on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Chairperson Penny Page said that pricing for the soup supper is still undetermined, but the event has become a major fundraising source for Relay For Life.

“The (soup supper) has become a tradition for us,” she said. “It is an event that has continued to get bigger the past few years.”

Now in its fourth year, Page said the soup supper has been drawing larger crowds in recent years.

“Last year we went full scale for the first time,” she said. “We are taking donations for making recipes, like bean soup, or chicken soup.”

Page said that cancer survivors who come to the soup supper will eat free.

“We let them eat for free as a way to honor them,” she said. “We want to sign up more survivors to be part of Relay, and we want them to have a good time.”

Despite economic troubles in Michigan in recent years, Relay For Life in Arenac County has continued to grow.

Page said that in 2010 the group’s goal was to raise $60,000. They ended up with $78,000.

“We are aiming for $80,000 this year,” she said.

For the 2011 campaign, Relay For Life has currently raised $2,844.56. Page said that Arenac County is hoping to increase from 26 Relay teams, to 40.

“We have 26 teams registered and a few more pending,” she said. “We encourage everyone to join us.”

Page said that Relay For Life will also be hosting a kickoff event on April 19, at the Standish-Sterling Central High School Commons from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“We welcome anyone and everyone to come to the event,” she said.

Page added that Arenac County will be receiving some awards, including one national award.

“The American Cancer Society has named the Arenac County Relay For Life group for an All-American award,” she said.

Paige said that Relay For Life is always looking for additional members and teams.
