Relay For Life raises $56,000
Funding to be raised until end of August
STANDISH — Although the goal of $80,000 has not been reached at this time, Chairperson Penny Page said the 2011 Arenac County Relay For Life was a “success.”
Page said this year’s relay has raised $56,000 after expenses, with a month of fundraising left to go. Relay For Life was held at the Standish-Sterling Middle School football field, on Saturday July 9 and Sunday, July 10.
“This is not a final total but that is what we have so far,” she said.
Page said she is not disappointed by the turnout at Relay For Life and the money raised to this point.
“We set very lofty goals,” she said. “We also understand that times are tough. We will see where we are at by the end of August.”
It would take extra effort from the community to reach $80,000, Page said.
“It is a stretch for us to make that happen,” she said. “We have a couple of fundraising opportunities yet. We will see what happens.”
Page said the Relay For Life weekend was a hit.
“We had so many sponsors and community support this year,” she said. “I think everyone involved had a fun-filled weekend.”
Page said during the luminaria ceremony on Saturday night, event coordinators ran out of glow sticks for people to hold on to.
“We had 500 to give away,” she said. “We were not planning for that many people to be there. Next year we are going to have to be prepared for more people.”
Page said that around 75 people were at the track during closing ceremonies and plans have already begun for the 2012 Relay For Life.
“We never really stop planning,” she said. “I feel like everyone had a great time at this year’s relay and we will be back again next year.”
Page said that there are still a few fundraising events to be held before the end of August. One of those events is a fundraiser at Pine River Golf Club in Standish on Aug. 20.
For information on the outing, held by the Relay For Life teams of Dave Mudge and Crystal Charbonneau, Page said to contact Mudge at 989-846-8920.
Page said a 2011 wrap-up meeting is planned for Wednesday, Aug. 24 at 6:30 p.m. at Standish-Sterling Central High School.
