Relay For Life rallies community raising more than $68,000
STANDISH — The Arenac County Relay For Life was held over the weekend at the Standish-Sterling Middle School Track, Saturday and Sunday, pushing the yearly total of money raised to more than $68,000 this year.
“We still have teams with fundraisers left to go,” said Arenac County Relay For Life Chairperson Dawn McNamara said. “We expect to be over $70,000 by the end of August.”
McNamara said the Relay For Life has grown every year, and the reason that it has had so much success is because of community support. This year Relay For Life celebrated its 25th anniversary, and McNamara said that this year’s Relay in Arenac County was the biggest she has ever seen it.
“Arenac County is one of the highest in the state in cancer deaths and unemployment.” McNamara said. “The fact people continue to come out shows they have had enough.”
She said that she is amazed at how much the Relay For Life has continued to grow, adding that, money raised has more than doubled over the past two years.
“It’s getting bigger and better, and there is something for everyone,” McNamara said.
McNamara said she has been to every Relay For Life since her husband was diagnosed with cancer in 1984. She said that the majority of people in the area have been affected by cancer in some way.
“This has been my favorite Relay,” she said. “We had an amazing day. The Relay gods looked on us, and we did not have any rain.”
More than 36 teams attended this year’s Relay For Life. McNamara said the committee is already taking notes for next year.
“We start officially planning for next year in September,” she said. “We need to find a cure.”
