Cruise and car show rolls back to town

AuGRES — The 16th annual Cruise Night and Car Show hosted by the AuGres Cruiser Car Club is rolling back into town on July 25 and 26.

According to an event flyer, the cruise lineup will begin at 3 p.m. Entrance for the cruise will be on Water Street at the North end of AuGres. The 13-mile cruise begins at 5:15 p.m. Saturday night in front of the AuGres-Sims High School on Michigan Avenue and finishes up at the AuGres Riverfront Park.

The flyer also says the band “Fabulous Oldies but Goodies” will play 50’s, 60’s and 70’s music after the cruise, during which there will also be dress, dance, muffler rap, flamethrower and neon light contests. The trophy presentation for the cruise, which contestants must be present to win, will be held at 8 p.m. at the bandstand, says the flyer. General admission is $3 and the first 200 “cruise” cars are entered for free.

Registration for the car show begins Sunday at 8 a.m. and concludes at noon. Dash plaques will be awarded to the first 150 cars registered and ballots for the show must be turned in by 12:30 p.m. Bob and Judy Steel will provide musical entertainment for the event and awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The flyer says there will be games for children and adults, including a model car contest with three age divisions.

The car show will feature 28 classes, ranging from a 1900-1948 Original Restored Class to a Custom Sport Compact class. The top three cars in each class receive a trophy and different categories – best paint and best engine, to name a few – will be the basis of judgment. Also, all cars entered must be at least 25 years old.

The flyer also says food and drinks will be sold at all events.

Fat fish equals phat cash

AuGRES — Anglers searching to reel in some extra fun during AuGres’ Rock-N-Roll Weekend need look no further than the annual one-day Walleye Tournament hosted by the AuGres-Sims-Whitney Fire Department (ASWFD). Now in its 23rd year, the cash-prize event draws more than 200 amateur fishermen each year to the Saginaw Bay.

According to ASWFD Fire Chief Kurt Humerickhouse, the July 25 contest accepts every amateur with a boat and a pole.

“It’s open to anybody who’s never fished in [a professional series event],” he said.

He says the competition begins at 6 a.m., with boat inspections being performed from 5:30 a.m. until 6:30 a.m. at the Northport Department of Natural Resources (DNR) boat launch (also referred to as the Break wall), and concludes at 3 p.m.

“We’ll (competitors) begin at the Break wall,” Humerickhouse said, adding at least two contestants must be aboard every boat in the tournament.

The top prize for the tournament is $1,200 for the combined total weight of a maximum five-fish stringer, says the fire chief. The largest walleye earns $400, as well, even if it isn’t on the heaviest stringer, he added.

Also, an event flyer also says the largest sheephead will garner $100, and payouts will extend to 15th place, based on a 75-boat entry. The flyer also says the entry fee is $25 per person, or a minimum of $50 per boat.

The flyer for the event says all competitors need a valid Michigan fishing license and boats must meet all federal and state boating laws and safety requirements. In addition, camping will not be permitted at the tournament site.

Humerickhouse says proceeds for the event will help supplement the ASWFD general fire account in which years past the funds have helped the department purchase a generator and life equipment.

“We (department) haven’t earmarked anything for this year just yet, but we’re looking at a camera this year,” he says. “We also use the funds to donate a $1,000 scholarship to AuGres schools each year.”

Arts and crafts bazaar not too far

AuGRES — The 16th annual arts and crafts show in AuGres won’t stray too far from its previous setup in years past.

According to event coordinator Sharon Boensch, the two-day display will coincide, as usual, with Rock-N-Roll Weekend’s Cruise Night and Car Show as well as the Walleye Tournament. The craft show is at the Veterans of Foreign War (VFW) hall across from the North Port boat launch. The arts and crafts show will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on July 25 and 26, Boensch says.

She says it will feature its normal jewelry, wood, furniture and lawn crafts as well as a few original booths as well.

“We’ll (show) have a booth with big wrought iron hangers,” she said. “There’s also a booth with a guy who uses machinery parts from old farm equipment to make what he calls ‘junk art.’”

She added each year is a little different as far as attendance and displays go, but the bazaar usually turns out some 2,000 visitors and 50 crafters.

A new feature to the arts and crafts show is the free transportation service being provided by Arenac Opportunities, says Boensch.

“Arenac Opportunities approached us (art show) to provide the free shuttle,” Boensch said. “We thought that was nice.”

She added a donation auction would take place on Saturday at 2 p.m.

“Crafters can donate an item, and the public is welcome to donate items as well,” Boensch said. “All of the proceeds will go to the Arenac County Relay for Life.”
